Biothèque Wallonie Bruxelles launches new website

Biothèque Wallonie Bruxelles (BWB ) is an inter-university collaboration platform open to all biobanks in the Brussels and Wallonia region to support applied biomedical research by providing access to human biospecimen samples and compliance with ethical and legal requirements.

BWB is born from the collaboration of 3 universities (UCL, ULB and ULg) and their university hospitals aiming at virtually integrating their respective biobanks. Each participating biobank keeps its legal structure, its responsibility as its position within the institution it belongs to. BWB operates according to a decentralised model with a virtual catalogue and a full-service offered both to academic and industrial end-users through its one-stop-shop model.

The project fits into the biobanking ecosystem at European and national level and benefits from support from public authorities: 2014-2017 (Q3): Innoviris for the Brussels capital region and DG06 for the Walloon region; and from 2017 (Q4) – 2019: exclusively by Innoviris.

Our mission & vision

Our mission is to create and implement a virtual network unifying all biobanks located in the Wallonia-Brussels regions to make available human biospecimen samples hosted by participating biobanks. We are dedicated to supporting all applied biomedical research done in academic and commercial institutions by providing high-quality samples and their associated data compliant with international quality standards and regulations.

Our vision is to be your favorite and intuitive go-to source for all types of richly characterised human biospecimen samples. At BWB, we see ourselves more as a research partner than just a simple biospecimens provider.

You share. We care.

Because it is unlike any other, a donor’s sample collected and stored in our participating biobanks brings unimaginable value to what we do. Because finding a cure or a new treatment thanks to this donation becomes possible, our duty is to translate this trust into actions.

We decided to begin by revising our website to make clear what our processes, core values and services are. In addition, we created a short movie that explains what we do in a simple and transparent way. This trust inspires us to drive change. This is the beginning. More is to come.
